Phosphated Finish in Drywall Screws

Phosphated drywall screws are commonly referred to as having a "black phos" finish. Technically the process is called zinc phosphating and provides a perfect finish for the task of installing interior drywall to wood or metal studs.

Phosphate conversion coatings were introduced in the early 20th century and have followed consistent processes since the 1940s. The zinc phosphating process for drywall screws can result in some variation in color within the gray to black spectrum (see image to the left), but this doesn't impact their suitability for their intended purpose.

All of the "phos" drywall screws sold at Fastener SuperStore have gone through the zinc phosphating process. This is the same standard finish that has been applied to "phos" drywall screws from almost all manufacturers and distributors over the last century. This coating is ideal for drywall screws for several reasons:

  • Delivers strong corrosion resistance to combat any moisure found in drywall, spackling compound, joint compound, etc....

  • Provides a perfect surface for adhesion of those materials, as well as for paint.

  • Prevents screw or material damage during installation due to the light oil coating present on the screws.

If you are using drywall screws for a purpose other than installing drywall, and they may be a visible part of your final project, you can always check with us to make sure the screws you receive will have the appearance you need.
