All About Self-Tapping Screws
Self-Tapping Screws are often confused with Self-Drilling Screws, and many people use the term “self-tapping screws” when referring to self-drilling screws.
The term self-tapping primarily refers to a screw’s ability to tap its own mating threads into the material into which it is being installed. It can also refer to its ability to tap its own hole, but that is limited to softer materials such as soft wood grades.
When we refer to self-tapping screws, we are most often referencing Type A or Type AB screws.

Type A Self-Tapping Screws
Type A screws have thread spacing that closely matches wood screws. Type A Screws are similar to wood screws in almost every way, except that they are always fully threaded, whereas wood screws are usually partially threaded.
Type A Self-Tapping Screws are available in a wide variety of head styles (flat, oval, pan, hex washer, truss and many more) and drive styles (phillips, square, torx® and several others). Material options include steel, 18-8 stainless steel and 410 stainless steel.

Type AB Self-Tapping Screws
Type AB screws have finer spaced threads, and are often referred to as Sheet Metal Screws. They are ideal for applications with thin sheet metal that has a pre-drilled hole.
Type AB Self-Tapping Screws are available in a wide variety of head styles (flat, oval, pan, hex washer, truss and many more) and drive styles (phillips, square, torx® and several others). Material options include steel, 18-8 stainless steel and 410 stainless steel.
