January 24, 2025
Cotter Pins are available in steel with a zinc finish and come in extended prong style. Inserted into the pre-drilled hole of a shaft or pin, the cotter pin’s points are spread to hold the assembly in position. They can also be used with castle or slotted nuts.
Cotter pins are sized by shank diameter (the circular area at the end of the pins) x the length of the shorter of two flat sides of the wire. Fastener SuperStore carries cotter pins in diameters from 1/16" up to 1/2" and in lengths from 1/4" up to 6".
Cotter pins are formed from half round wire which is shaped with a loop at one end creating a wide head. The finished product has one end of the wire extending slightly beyond the other end, with a chiseled point.
They are used to anchor various assemblies by inserting into a drilled hole of a shaft or pin and spreading the points to hold the assembly in position. When used with castle or slotted nuts, it becomes a safety locking device
